With Spring (almost, but not quite) out in full force and Summer just around the corner, travel season is among us! I don’t know about you, but I personally CANNOT wait to get out of the city and just relax for a few days. I have a girls trip planned with my sister to Florida this weekend and I’m heading to Europe at the very end of summer (yay!). The downside though? Packing! Oh how I dread packing. My sister typically makes me a list so I don’t miss a thing, but when it comes to my beauty products I am extremely particular about what I take with me. It’s important to me when I travel that I pack lightly and wisely, yet still have enough options with me to create a variety of looks, because let’s be honest – you just cannot plan out your makeup looks! In today’s post I’m sharing all of my travel beauty essentials and giving my personal tips and tricks on how to pack effectively.
– SKINCARE –
Skincare is one of my most essential beauty categories when traveling. Whenever we travel to a new place, our skin tends to react to changes in the atmosphere and air quality which may often lead to breakouts or texture on our face. To prevent this, I always pack a good face wash, exfoliant, toner, and moisturizer. Since this can get pretty bulky to pack, I try to use the mini sized versions of these from Sephora. My top choices for travel are all from the OleHenrikson line – Face the Truth Gel Cleanser, Pore Balance Facial Sauna Scrub, Balancing Force Oil Control Toner and Counter Balance Oil Control Hydrator. I love this line of products, and I do gravitate towards the oil control ones especially when I’m travelling to warmer climates because my face can get oily very quickly and I definitely don’t want to be sporting that look all day!
– FACE –
For the face, I like to create a fresh, radiant look especially when travelling. I also try to pack travel friendly products so I don’t have to worry about breakage while in transit. I typically take my holy grail Smashbox Iconic Photo Finish Foundation Primer since it creates a flawless base for the rest of my makeup. For foundation, I usually gravitate towards the L’Oréal Paris Infallible Pro-Glow Foundation for travelling since it gives a natural radiant finish while also providing buildable coverage for a variety of looks. I also love the Too Faced Born This Way Naturally Radiant Concealer for travelling because it’s full coverage and brightens up the face for a fresh, awake look even if I’m not wearing a full face of makeup. Some other necessities for travelling are bronzer to get that sexy tan look, setting powder to keep your makeup in place all day, blush to give you a nice flush look, highlighter (because who doesn’t want that J. Lo glow?) and setting spray to make it all last the entire day! I typically switch these up each time I travel depending on what I’m currently obsessing over, but a few of my current faves that I’ll be packing for my trip to Florida include the Tarte Amazonian Clay Matte Waterproof Bronzer, bareMinerals Mineral Veil Setting Powder, Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush, Physicians Formula Butter Blush, Essence Pure Nude Highlighter, and Boscia White Charcoal Mattifying MakeUp Setting Spray.
– EYES –
When it comes to eye products, there are way too many options out there so this is where you have to be strategic with your packing in order to avoid over doing it! I suggest packing only one eyeshadow palette that gives you enough options to create a variety of looks. My current favourite? The Colourpop Dream St. Palette by Kathleen Lights. I truly think it is THE perfect eyeshadow palette for travelling. Not only is the formula amazing and easy to blend out, but what really makes it amazing is the colour selection. You literally have everything you would ever need to create a huge variety of eye looks! You have mattes, shimmers, neutrals, warm-tones, and pops of colours. You also have great shades for blending out your crease, and others for highlighting your brow bone and inner corner. Seriously, this palette has it all AND it’s so affordable! This is now my go-to travel palette, because there are so many eye looks that I can create from it, whether I want a very natural look or a very glam night out kind of look. The packaging also makes it ideal for travelling because it’s small and lightweight.
My other must-have eye products are a good mascara, a pencil eye liner, and a liquid eye liner. I’m not someone that wears falsies pretty much ever, so when I travel I always want to take a mascara that I know will give me the volume and length that I want to create a great look. My go-to for travelling is the L’Oréal Voluminous Lash Paradise mascara because it makes my lashes look amazing! For eyeliners, I typically stick to black and browns since they are the most versatile. My faves to pack with me are the Ciaté London Wonderwand Gel-kohl Eyeliner Pencil and the Kat Von D Tattoo Liner. And let’s not forget our brows! I typically just use a brow pencil, but I will pack a mini brow gel just incase I’m going somewhere where I think I need the extra staying power. My favourite product to travel with is the Benefit Cosmetics Goof Proof Brow Pencil and Benefit Cosmetics Gimme Brow+ Volumizing Eyebrow Gel.
– LIPS –
For lips, I first and foremost always pack a lip balm or conditioner. It’s important to always moisturize your lips especially when you’re travelling to different climates! I’m a sucker for good old Blistex Lip Medex, because it just works and it works beautifully! When it comes to lipsticks, this is where I splurge a little – I like to pack a good selection (they’re small and thin so they don’t take up too much room). I like to pack lipsticks, liquid lipsticks, and lipglosses because you really never know what type of lip day you’re going to have. It’s also important to pick up a variety of shades – I stick mostly to nudes such as the bareMinerals GenNude Buttercream Lipgloss in Flirt and Tarte Quick Dry Matte Lip Paint in Festival, but I also grab one or two bolder colours like a bright pink or red just in case I want to step up my game one day such as the NudeStix Intense Matte Lip + Cheek Pencil in Royal (seriously the perfect red!). Another great lip product that I have fallen in love with for travelling are the ColourPop Lippi Stix! They are so comfortable on the lip, provide amazing colour, and are absolutely perfect for sticking into your purse when you are out and about exploring all day.
When it comes to packing your beauty products, its so important to pick out products that are versatile and will work towards creating a variety of looks so that you can avoid over-packing. Also make sure you are packing all of the essentials – skincare and lips are a must for me, but I also make sure that I pack at least one of every other type of product so that I can do a full glam look if I’m going out for a night on the town or a casual everyday look for when I’m just touring the city. So pack wisely, and pick products that are versatile – it makes the process so much easier!
