HAPPY NEW YEAR!! How the heck are we already a whole week into 2020?! I know everyone says this, but holy crap time is FLYING by so quickly. Has it always gone by this quickly, or do we notice it more now as adults since we’re in a constant routine of work, chores, sleep, repeat? Whatever it is, I’m here to kindly ask the time gods to PLEASE slow things down a little! Since the new year kind of snuck up out of nowhere, I have to admit that I’m a bit behind on setting my goals for this year – I know, crazy to think that there are people out here who don’t have it all together at midnight on New Year’s Day, right? OK seriously though, I like to take my time in figuring out exactly what I want my vision for the upcoming year to be. Last year I created a vision board that displayed various themes in my life that I wanted to focus on throughout the year rather than setting specific resolutions and I absolutely LOVED that idea! It’s so easy to give up on specific goals, but if you have a theme to focus on instead, I find that it can be easier to work towards. In recent years I’ve also seen many people choose a specific word to focus their year around, and I think that is so genius because it’s open ended and allows you to shape the year as you go. In today’s post I’m sharing a bit about what my goals/themes are for this year, and how I set myself up for success so that I can achieve all of my goals!
My first major theme for 2020 is GROWTH – personally and professionally. This is a recurring theme for me each year, because I’m always striving to grow in all aspects of my life, but it’s becoming a much more prominent theme for this year in particular. The last two years was a time of weeding out all of the negative from my life, and now I want to focus on growing towards a more positive life. Emotionally and mentally, I’d like to focus on becoming the best version of myself. Professionally, I’d love to focus on growing my blog this year since I’ll be home on maternity leave and will have a lot of time to dedicate to it. Ideally I’d love to post consistently, grow my following, and collaborate with other bloggers and brands.
The second, and probably the biggest, theme for this year is being a MAMA. 2019 was the best year ever because I became a mom to my sweet baby girl, and I know that 2020 is going to be the year where I really develop in my role as a mom as she continues to grow. I’m so grateful for being able to stay home on maternity leave for the majority of this year, and I hope to use that time to focus on developing a strong relationship with baby Mia and developing my parenting style to be the best mom that I can be for her.
Last, but certainly not least, my third theme for this year is OUTLOOK. I know this may sound like a really strange theme to have, but we’re at the start of a whole new decade and I really want to use this year to start figuring out what I want the next 10 years to look like. One aspect of this is figuring out where we want to live and raise our kids. We quickly realized after having Mia that we’d need to move into a bigger home, so that is definitely a goal for 2020. I’d also like to start having a rough plan looking forward at how many kids we want and when, what goals we have for our careers, travel goals, etc. I feel like talking about our outlook for the decade and putting it out into the universe will help us to continuously work towards those goals.
While working on this post, I realized that all of my themes had a major connection – growth! Yes, that is one of my themes specifically, but even my other two themes involve growth in a more specific aspect of my life. I think that will be my word for 2020. GROWTH. I’m SOO excited for this year and to work towards all of my major themes for the year, because I honestly feel like I dropped the ball last year. I had all of these things that I wanted to achieve, but after I got pregnant I totally stepped back and just focussed on being healthy for me and babe. This year, yes I’ll be super busy being a mom to a newborn, but I think I’ll have a lot more time to just focus on the things that I want to and really be able to work towards all of my goals.
Ok, so HOW exactly do I plan to set myself up for success this year? Well first things first, I’m putting it out into the universe by writing this post. I find that when I’m trying to set some big goals for myself, telling a friend, making a social media post about it, creating a vision board, or simply just saying it out loud helps! Put it out there because once you do, it almost seems more “real” and less of just a thought. Next, draw up a big picture plan and start to break it down into action items. This doesn’t have to be super specific at first, but more so an over-arching view of how you can achieve your goals. Finally, check in with yourself regularly. One of my favourite things to do is take some time for myself every once in a while (preferably during a hot bath with a glass of wine) and reflect on my goals and where I am in respect to achieving them. Then I can tweak the plan accordingly. I have a much more detailed post on Setting Goals to Ensure Success, where I delve into more detail about how to set specific goals and what to do to make sure you achieve them, so be sure to check that out when you’re planning out your goals for this year.
I’d love to hear what goals you’re setting for yourself this year, or if you have a word or theme for the year. Cheers to a new year, a new decade, and new success.
