I’m a strong believer that a good hair day is all you need to look great. It doesn’t matter if it’s a full glam type of day or a casual no-makeup kind of day – as long as your hair looks neat and on point, the rest of you will shine. Whatever style we choose to do on a daily basis, throughout the week we tend to put our hair through a lot of stress with the use of flat irons and curling irons. Because of that, and in order to keep our hair looking its best, it’s extremely important to have a good hair-care routine. Today I’m sharing mine with you so you can get some tips on how I keep my hair looking its best.
I consider my hair to be one of my best, and one of my favourite, features. I love fresh, clean, shiny looking hair, and I take a lot of time and effort to keep my hair looking healthy and great. Let’s break my hair-care routine down by category.
– Cleaning my hair –
I love the look of freshly washed, clean hair. With so many options on the market these days, it’s hard to say which shampoos and conditioners are really the best, but when it comes to picking the right ones, you have to consider your specific hair type and what you want to get out of your shampoo. For example, I don’t care much for volume, but I do want something that leaves my hair looking shiny, clean, and moisturized.
I’ve been using the same shampoo for over 10 years now, and I love it. It’s the John Freida Brilliant Brunette Multi Tone Revealing Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner. It does everything that I want out of a shampoo and leaves my hair looking and feeling it’s best. What’s even better is it’s amazing smell! Back in the day it used to smell like chocolate (YUM!), but they’ve recently switched over their scent to a more fresh, clean smell which is really nice. Recently, I’ve also started to switch it up a bit and intermittently use the MoroccanOil Moisture Repair Shampoo and Conditioner set, and I love it just as much. It really moisturizes and nourishes your hair and the smell is to die for!
– Hydrating my hair –
Atleast once every two weeks I try to do a hair mask treatment on my hair to further hydrate and nourish it. Two of my favourites that I’ve been using the past few years are the MoroccanOil Intense Hydrating Mask for medium to thick hair and the L’Oréal Mythic Oil Nourishing Mask for all hair types. Although I love the L’Oréal one more, they both work wonderfully and leave my hair looking extremely healthy and shiny, while feeling incredibly soft.
– Protecting my hair from heat –
This is one of the most crucial steps in my hair care routine. I flat iron my hair at 350-400°F atleast 3 times a week (usually more), and that amount of heat can take a serious toll on the health of my hair. In order to help combat that, before I apply any heat to my hair, I very generously spray it with the TRESemmé Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Spray which is vitamin enriched and protects from heat up to 230°C (446°F). I’ve used this for almost 8 years now, and it does a great job at protecting my hair from any heat damage.
– Nourishing my hair –
This is another important step in my hair care routine, and one of the keys to getting my shiny soft hair. After applying a lot of heat to my hair when flat ironing, I always try to add in some extra nourishment by working in a small pea-sized amount of a hair oil all over the hair, while focusing it on the ends. My absolute favourite one to use is the MoroccanOil Treatment for all hair types. Not only does it nourish my hair, but it also smooths out any fly-aways and leaves my hair extremely shiny. Another one that I’ve recently started using is the Ouai Haircare Hair Oil, which does exactly the same things, although it doesn’t smell as delicious as the MoroccanOil line of products.
The only downside of adding in these extra oils is that my hair tends to get a bit oilier quicker than it normally would. I try to combat this using two methods – (1) I only apply the hair oil treatments to the roots of my hair once I’ve finished the middle and ends of my hair, when there is only a very little bit left on my hands; and (2) using dry shampoo once it gets too oily for my liking. I have yet to find a dry shampoo that I truly love, but in the meantime I quite like the MoroccanOil Dry Shampoo for Dark Tones. I know this is the third MoroccanOil product that I’ve mentioned, but I truly love their products and they smell absolutely amazing!
