I don’t know about you, but I am soooo over this winter weather! We’re in the middle of our second big winter storm of the season here in Toronto and I am so NOT feeling it. I would give just about anything to be lying on a beach under the hot sun right now. Who’s with me? The sad part is that we still probably have AT LEAST another month left of this gloomy weather. In today’s post, I’m sharing 5 tips to beat the winter blues, because we all need some help to get out of this winter funk!
Go out and have some fun!
OK this one is so important. I feel like a lot of people end up staying in ALL winter because “it’s too cold” and that just makes the winter blues so much worse. There are a ton of winter activities that are so much fun if you just fight through the cold and try them such as skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing, and ice skating. The list goes on! I love getting out to do winter activities because they’re a ton of fun to do with friends AND you barely feel the cold once you’re out there moving around.
Take up a new hobby.
I feel like the winter months are the PERFECT time to take up a new hobby, because the reality is that we have a lot more free time on our hands compared to the summer months. Rather than spending that time binge watching Netflix (totally not hating on that, cause I’m so guilty of doing it!), why not start a new hobby and do something fun from the comfort of home.
Do you find that you tend to get a little bit lazier in the winter months? It’s cold and snowy out so you skip out on those jogs around the block and end up spending a whole lot more time on the sofa? Guilty! But you guys, there are SOOO many alternatives so that you can still stay active and keep your energy levels up. Indoor gyms, yoga classes, group training classes, dance lessons. Soo many options to get you up and moving. This is so beneficial because it gives you a HUGE energy boost and combats that feeling of being down and gloomy.
Soak up the sun when you can.
A huge part of the reason why people feel the winter blues and experience things such as seasonal depression is because of the lack of SUN. There’s something about a bright sunny day that just makes you intrinsically happy, but those are hard to come by in the winter. However, they’re not impossible to find! Although the sun rises later and sets earlier, we still have some hours of light and if the clouds move aside there can be some decent sunshine. It’s so important to get outside on those days and soak up the sun, even if it’s just for a few minutes a day.
OK this probably sounds contrary to almost everything that I’ve just said, but here me out! Each season is special and has certain “traditions” or things that make it special. Part of what makes winter special is chunky knit sweaters, hot cocoa, snuggling up in front of the fireplace, and warm fuzzy socks. Embrace that! The same way that we go all out with pumpkin spice everythinggggg in the fall and completely enjoy it, embrace everything that makes winter special and cozy and enjoy it to the fullest.
These may seem silly, but they totally work for me! I try to beat the winter blues by staying busy and enjoying everything about the season as much as I can. I know the snowstorms and slippery sidewalks can be annoying and frustrating, but if we look past the negative parts of winter there really are some awesome aspects as well. Focus on those! Let me know what other tips you have for beating the winter blues in the comments below.
